Join CINA: membership requirements

"Independently owned"

The following definitions apply:

 “Independently owned” means a local news organization that meets all of the following requirements:

(1) The local news organization is not a publicly traded entity, and no more than 5 percent of the beneficial ownership of the local news organization is owned, directly or indirectly, by a publicly traded entity.

(2) The local news organization is not beneficially owned by a private fund.

(3) The local news organization is not a subsidiary or owned by a hedge fund.

(4) Is self-governing

"A California News Outlet"

Is defined as: 

(a) Owned and operated in California

(b) At least 51% of staff are California residents.

(d) Is not a platform of a special interest group, individual or cause.

(e) At least 75% is original content

(f) 51% of staff are California residents

(g) Has been publishing for five or more years.

Membership is subject to approval by the Board of Directors.

*There currently no cost to join, although membership dues will be forthcoming.
